Servers Plus are delighted to be the first retailer with stock of the new HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L, featuring a faster and more power efficient TurionII NEO N40L processor, replacing the AthlonII NEO N36L in the original model.
The new microserver – model code 658553-421 – is an ideal first server solution for small businesses – It offers easy upgradability combined with a small footprint and near silent operation – perfect for small offices or home offices.
The new model does not qualify for the popular £100 cashback offer from HP, however – which will make the original model the preferred investment for most.
The popular HP ProLiant MicroServer has been revised and updated with a faster processor and is available in a series of pre-configured bundles.
The CPU has been upgraded from the original 1.3GHz dual-core AMD AthlonII NEO N36L to a newer and better performing 1.5GHz dual-core AMD TurionII NEO N40L. The newer CPU offers better performance and greater energy efficiency whilst still offering full AMD-V virtualisation, 64-bit architecture and DDR3 memory support.

- 658552-421 – SBS bundle with 4GB, 2 x 500GB HDDs and SBS 2011 Essentials pre-installed

HP ProLiant Servers – The next generation…
According to some of our industry sources, the next generation of ProLiant servers, the successors to the current G7 series, will be known as Gen8. We’re not sure why HP fancied a change from the norm for the next series, as we would have expected ‘G8′ to be more in line with the previous generations.
However, we have heard that all ProLiant Gen8 servers will feature iLO 4 – or Integrated Lights-Out 4 – to give it it’s full name. The iLO 4 management system will bring a range of new features and improvements over iLO 3.
Although we have not been given a release date, we can speculate that ProLiant Gen8 servers will be released sooner rather than later as they will feature CPU’s that are backward compatible with the current G7 series servers.
All HP ProLiant Gen8 Servers will be available to configure on our iQuote hardware configuration tool, watch this space for more details as soon as we have them.
Microsoft leaks details of Windows 8 Server
The next major release in the Microsoft Server OS line is Windows 8 Server, due for release in 2012. Up until now, Microsoft have been tight-lipped on what we can expect to see in the upcoming release. However, at the Worldwide Partner Conference 2011, the first few details emerged.
Windows 8 Server will feature: -
- More than 100 new features compared to Server 2008 R2.
- New Hyper-V Hypervisor with support for more than 16 virtual processors.
- New Unlimited Hyper-V VM replication feature.
- No tax on vRAM, vCores or VM replication
We do not yet have details on the Windows 8 Server packages, but they are likely to follow the predecessor, in which case the packages should look something like this: -

- Microsoft Windows 8 Server Standard
- Microsoft Windows 8 Server Enterprise
- Microsoft Windows 8 Server Datacenter
- Microsoft Windows 8 Web Server
After some negative feedback from customers, VMware have announced changes to the vSphere 5 licencing model.
A major change in vSphere 5 is the way the software is licenced – based around vRAM entitlements. The original licencing model proposed an 8GB vRAM limit on the free vSphere hypervisor, which increased to 24GB with the purchase of Essentials or Standard licences.
Following a negative response from end users, VMware have reviewed these limits and announced some major changes. The proposed 8GB limit on the free vSphere hypervisor has been increased to 32GB, along with Essentials and Standard licences.
Enterprise and Enterprise Plus licences have also seen an increase in their vRAM entitlements, going from 32GB to 64GB and 48GB to 96GB respectively.
The changes are of great benefit to users of the free vSphere hypervisor, who use the software in test lab environments in the home, for whom the 8GB vRAM limit would have been a huge disadvantage.
Servers Plus will be creating a vSphere 5.0 test lab bundle for these users as soon as the ESXi 5.0 release becomes available for end users.
